The internet of things (IoT) refers to uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure, for example a waste bin could be “online”, allowing fill level data to be obtained in real-time by the bin servicing company. Access to simple yet powerful knowledge like this ensures tasks are completed to the highest possible efficiency saving money and reducing costs.
The majority of devices or sensors that will be connected to the internet of things will require very small amounts of data to be sent infrequently, for example you may only want to ask for an update on bin fill level once a day. This low data transfer demand means devices can utilise low power communications methods enabling devices to have long battery life (10yrs). One such communication technology is GPRS most commonly used by your mobile phone when it can’t access the 3G or 4G networks.
FarSite have also teamed up with internet of things specialists Neul who have developed a new method of sending data through the TV whitespace. Neul net will boast low power use, long range and good building penetration. FarSite’s fantastic indepth knowledge and background in communications means all our IoT solutions will support the most suitable networks available.
FarSite are producing a range of products that utilise the internet of things thinking, take a look at our current range of IoT products.
